How to run 1-on-1 with your direct report
Committing to regular 1-on-1s with each of your direct reports is the first step. But it’s not enough. Managing these critical meetings effectively is equally important if you want a team of productive, positive people. Here’s how to do it:
1. Schedule regular 1-on-1s for the next six-plus months
Think of these meetings as your secret weapon for team awesomeness. Sure, you might think your team is too big, your office is too noisy, or you’re just too busy. But you can always find a way to make it work — even if it’s a quick walk-and-talk or a pre-opening check-in. Find a rhythm that suits you and your team. Weekly is great for staying in the loop, but biweekly or monthly can work too. Just get them on your calendar now and make them non-negotiable.
2. Block off at least 30 minutes if possible
Aim for an hour if you can, but if not, 30 minutes is still golden. Even a short chat is better than nothing. Dive deep and make the most of the time you have.
3. Never cancel
Canceling sends the wrong message. If something urgent comes up, reschedule for later the same day. Show your team they matter.
