Famous cioppino at Sotto Mare — San Francisco, California
Trying out local cuisines when I visit a new place is always a delight. Often times, I don’t have to spend a fortune to try out local dishes by eating only at exclusive Michelin three starred restaurants as some of these local foods are available as street foods or in small restaurants. As for San Francisco, number one food that always come as a recommendation when you visit San Francisco is cioppino. Cioppino is a tomato-based seafood stew that was invented by the San Francisco Italian fishermen of North Beach in the late 1800s using whatever seafood was left over from the day’s catch. Often times it was crab, shrimp, clams and fish, which were then combined with onions, garlic and tomatoes, and then everything was cooked with herbs in olive oil and wine. Originally it was made on the boats while out at sea and in homes, but as Italian restaurants started sprouting up around the wharf, cioppino became a very popular dish at local restaurants.
Although many San Francisco restaurants serve cioppino as dining option, one restaurant always make into the recommended cioppino list every single time, and it is Sotto Mare. Sotto Mare has been featured on television and in many magazines, and Sotto Mare is world-famous for “The Best Damn Crab Cioppino”. Sotto Mare is located in the following address: 552 Green St, San Francisco, CA 94133
